British citizenship by naturalisation

Settlement

Naturalisation is discretionary. Meeting the residence count is not a guarantee. We prepare the application, the absence table, and the referee checks.

This page is general information about UK immigration routes. It is not advice on your case. Rules and fees change. Confirm the current position before you pay a Home Office fee.

Who this is for

  • You hold indefinite leave or settled status and want to naturalise.
  • You are the husband, wife, or civil partner of a British citizen and may use the three-year route.

What this route is

Naturalisation sits under the British Nationality Act 1981. Section 6(1) is the standard route: five years of lawful residence, including 12 months with indefinite leave. Section 6(2) is for the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen: three years of residence, without that extra 12-month wait.

Citizenship is not lost by ordinary travel in the way indefinite leave can be. A grant still needs a ceremony before you can apply for a passport. Refusals often come from miscounted absences, referees who do not qualify, or a good-character issue that was not disclosed.

Requirements we check

  • Lawful residence for the right number of years.
  • Absences within the limits, worked out from the application date backwards.
  • Good character, including what must be disclosed.
  • Two referees who meet the rules.
  • English and Life in the UK, unless exempt.

Evidence that usually matters

  • Passport copies covering the residence period.
  • An absence calendar.
  • Referee details checked before they sign.
  • ILR or settled-status evidence.

How we work

  1. Read the position. We choose section 6(1) or 6(2).
  2. List the gaps. We build the absence table from the passports, not from memory.
  3. Prepare the application. We check referees and good-character disclosure.
  4. Check before filing. We prepare form AN and the supporting documents.

Where applications go wrong

  • Treating the requirements as an entitlement. The decision is discretionary.
  • A referee who is not a British passport holder of the right standing.
  • Leaving a caution, debt, or immigration breach undisclosed.
